What happens when Windows Server 2016 reaches end of life?

From 13 January 2027, Microsoft will no longer publish security updates or provide technical support for Windows Server 2016, except to organisations that pay for Extended Security Updates. New vulnerabilities discovered after that date will stay unpatched, which can also affect compliance with frameworks such as Cyber Essentials that expect supported, patched software.

What to do before the end-of-life date

  1. Find every server still running Windows Server 2016, including virtual machines and servers in the cloud.
  2. Plan in-place upgrades or migrations to a supported version, starting with internet-facing and business-critical servers.
  3. Check application compatibility with the version you are moving to.
  4. For servers you cannot move in time, look at Extended Security Updates (ESU). Microsoft offers up to three more years of security fixes for Windows Server 2016, including pay-as-you-go through Azure Arc. Check current pricing and eligibility with Microsoft or your licensing partner.
  5. Track progress until the last server is upgraded or retired.
